The first first global online myopia management course developed by the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI), featuring School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) myopia researchers was officially launched in June 2017 to Australian and South African optometrists. The School and BHVI staff appearing in this course include: Dr Pauline Kang, Dr Alex Hui, Dr Isabelle Jalbert, Dr Monica Jong, Professor Padmaja Sankaridurg and Mr Daniel Tilia with Visiting Academic, Ms Margaret Lam as our guest panellist at the webinar.
One hundred and sixty Australian and 50 South African optometrists completed this CPD accredited course. The pilot course was run in February 2017 which was a major success, and led to the current roll out that includes South Africa, and now North America and India, and eventually China. This course is innovative because it delivers 14 short online videos, interactive case studies and a live webinar that allows problem-based learning and instantaneous feedback, completed in the practitioners own-time (except the webinar). The course delves into the epidemiology, aetiology, evidence for interventions and how to apply it to the patient. The course has been priced at approximately $100 to make it accessible for all and help disseminate knowledge and, in line with the Brien Holden Vision Institute’s belief of “Vision for Everyone Everywhere”.
This evidence-based course had been developed due to the demand for how to better manage myopia in the face of what can be confusing, often with different viewpoints across practitioners. This course prides itself on delivering the latest evidence-based research on how we can clinically slow myopia using a range of optical and pharmacologic treatments in an easy-to understand manner.
This is an exciting collaboration between the Brien Holden Holden Vision Institute and SOVS, and is a wonderful way to showcase the important work in this area that we are contributing to. Post course feedback has been very positive with optometrists reporting “the course is very applicable to practice” and that “it will change the way we manage someone with myopia straight away” and “the course was interesting and a valuable use of time”.
