Program Information

Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Clinical Optometry (BVisSc/MClinOptom)

The BVisSc/MClinOptom program trains future optometric practitioners, vision researchers and teachers and is taken over five years of full-time study. The program cannot be undertaken part-time or externally.

Stage 1 covers the foundation sciences of chemistry, physics, anatomy and introductory optics.

Stages 2 and 3 explore the applied sciences of physiology, vision science and ocular disease.

Stage 4 develops problem solving, clinical skills and patient management strategies.

Stage 5 integrates knowledge and skills using clinical placements and external rotations. Students are also required to attend approved work experience placements.  Recent legislative changes have allowed optometrists to use topical therapeutic drugs for the treatment of some eye diseases.

Stage 3 introduces advanced topics in vision science and optics allowing you to decide what areas of research and development might offer the best future opportunities. The major strength of this program is its ability to let you develop a unique set of marketable skills and abilities.

A stimulating Stage 4 Honours program is available for students who would like to develop a wider range of research skills. Progression to Stage 4 is subject to academic performance. Students seeking to enrol in Stage 4 are required to have the approval of the Head of School.
